NIE Graduate Student Conference 2023

The NIE Graduate Student Conference 2023 (NIEGSC 2023) is a conference organised by graduate students, for graduate students. It will be held on Saturday, 7th October 2023* at the National Institute of Education (NIE) Lecture Theatre 1, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore*. NIEGSC 2023 seeks to provide an inclusive platform for both NTU and NIE graduate students to share and discuss their research as well as to connect and interact professionally.

*This is a physical conference, all attendees MUST be in Singapore on the conference date to join.

Conference background

NIEGSC 2023 is a continuation of previous NIE graduate student conferences, initially known as “Graduate Student Day” in 2012 and subsequently rebranded as “Graduate Student Conference” since 2016. This year, the conference is organised by a group of graduate students from various faculties and backgrounds together with the Office of Graduate Studies and Professional Learning (GPL).

Conference objective and scope

The theme of this year’s NIEGSC is “Transforming Research to Practice”. This conference aims to encourage fellow students to work on research frontiers that can be translated into real-world practices and to foster interdisciplinary collaborations among graduate students in NTU and NIE. This conference aspires to gather students from diverse fields to explore multidisciplinary approaches and sustainable solutions in research that may advance our knowledge and shape our dynamic society for the better.

Title of Keynote Address
Academia versus wicked problems: Forging a productive journey in translational academic research.

Abstract
From fake news to climate change, social inequality to religious extremism, the world is beset with wicked problems that academia is constantly challenged to help tackle. But these problems cannot be resolved by academia alone, nor through the perspective of any one academic discipline. Instead, scholars of all disciplines should seize opportunities to translate academic research into innovative and socially-relevant practice. We must engage with multiple stakeholders and collaborate across industry and disciplinary borders, while communicating our ideas to the broader public. Within academe, we must be prepared to step outside of our siloes to work in interdisciplinary teams with multi-perspectival approaches and methods. I will draw on my personal journey and those of inspirational colleagues to distil several key ways for emerging scholars to plan career trajectories for effective translational research.

About the Speaker
Sun Sun Lim is Vice President, Partnerships & Engagement and Professor of Communication and Technology at Singapore Management University. She has extensively researched the social impact of technology, focusing on technology domestication by families, future of work and AI ethics. A prolific scholar, she has over 90 academic publications including Transcendent Parenting: Raising Children in the Digital Age (Oxford University Press, 2020) and The Oxford Handbook of Mobile Communication and Society (Oxford University Press, 2020). She is a Fellow of the International Communication Association, an honour accorded to the top 1% of communication scholars internationally. She is also an honoree of the inaugural Singapore 100 Women in Tech list in 2020. Beyond academia, she is committed to translating academic research to inform public policy for societal benefit. She serves on fourteen journal editorial boards and the Social Science Research Council, Media Literacy Council, Singapore Environment Council and the International Panel on the Information Environment. From 2018-2020, she was Nominated Member of the 13th Parliament of Singapore, raising issues such as governance of the use of big data, regulatory overreach in eradicating online falsehoods and digital rights for children. She frequently offers her expert commentary in international outlets including Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and Scientific American and writes a monthly technology column in The Straits Times. She has won eight awards for excellent teaching. See www.sunsunlim.com for more.
